Congratulations Luella High School Lady Lions

Luella High School LionsLuella High School Fastpitch Softball team defeated Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy 4-3, winning the Dan Wallace Invitational Fastpitch Softball Tournament title for the second year. The game was tied 1-1 until the 9th inning and continued to 10 innings before Luella was able to end the game as the winning team. Luella went on to beat Ola 3-2 to capture the tournament title.

Henry County students that reside in Heron Bay in Locust Grove attend Luella High School, along with Luella Middle School and Bethlehem Elementary School.

lesmis.gifLiving in Heron Bay gives residents access to all of the wonderful events taking place every weekend in Henry County and Locust Grove. While Heron Bay does do its best to offer parties and events within the community, on those off weekends you won’t lack for fun activities. For example, this weekend at the Henry County Performing Arts Center, you can catch the School Edition of “Les Miserables.” Presented by the Henry Players, you can see an author-approved version of the hit musical for only $13.

Or, for some outdoor fun in Stockbridge, tonight you can partake in the “Walk on the Wild Side Night Hike.” With a hike taking place every Thursday evening through the summer, you can get an introduction to the nocturnal world of the forest and swamps. This is fun for the whole family and only $5 a person! From 7:30 - 9:00 you might see fluorescent creatures, hear bats or even spot an owl. Registration is required to take part in these hikes, so call 770-389-7801.

These weekend activities are a great way for you to get acquainted with the area in which you live. I am sure you have spent plenty of time taking advantage of Heron Bay’s exceptional amenity package, so you have undoubtedly befriended quite a few community neighbors. So why don’t you invite these friends to Les Miserable or to take a walk on the wild side?

Get Your Groove on For A Good Cause

The Beauty of Locust Grove in Henry CountyThe local non-profit organization, Locust Grove Better Home Town, is hosting Groovin’ in the Grove this Saturday! For those that don’t know about Locust Grove Better Hometown, it is a local organization that strives to revitalize downtown Locust Grove. Heron Bay Golf & Country Club is proud to support this cause, and encourages its residents to get involved too. Many residents at this fantastic Atlanta golf community show their support by volunteering for the organization, and if you would like to volunteer also contact Linda Hutchison at lhutchison@locustgrove-ga.gov. Of course, volunteering is not necessary to contribute to Locust Grove Better Hometown, attend some of their fundraisers like this weekend’s fun party. Heron Bay Residents Getting Involved

Several residents of Heron Bay Golf and Country Club , an exquisite Atlanta golf community, are volunteering to help the city of Locust Grove raise money in an effort to improve the aesthetic appeal of the downtown area.

Locust Grove Better Hometown , Inc is a non-profit organization, which focuses on revitalizing historic downtown. Once Locust Grove was designated an official Better Hometown City in March 2006, the city government became eligible for state grants and loans which are used to help refurbish the city.

In order to raise additional funds, Locust Grove Better Hometown is hosting several fundraisers during 2008.

  • Groovin’ In The Grove is Saturday, May 3 from 7pm to 10pm on the front lawn of City Hall. Tables of 8 are available for $250 and dance music will be provided by Party Time band.
  • 2nd Annual Peach Stand Road Race will be Saturday, May 24. This 5K run will begin at the Peach Stand on Hwy 42 and meander through downtown Locust Grove. (more…)

The Simply Southern Jubilee Bluegreass & Bar-B-Que Festival will be held April 18-20 at Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, Georgia. The event, co-hosted by the Henry County Chamber of Commerce and Henry County Parks & Recreation, will benefit the Haven House and Nash Farm Battlefield. On April 26, the annual Locust Grove Day parade begins at 10am at the Locust Grove library, travels through historic downtown and ends at the City Hall complex. Come out and enjoy the parade, great food and arts and crafts. The event is free to the publc. Call 770.957.5043 for more information.

Read Across America Day

Recently Henry County schools acknowledged Read Across America Day. Local leaders and parents were asked to volunteer their time on Monday, March 3 in the 11th Annual celebration. The purpose of this event is to encourage students to learn and become proficient in basic reading skills.

This day takes place across the nation on or near the birthdate of Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss.

Heron Bay students that attend Bethlehem Elementary School in Locust Grove participated in the event.

Upper Towaliga, Cole Reservoir Opens Early

Cole Reservoir at Heron BayThe Henry County Water and Sewage Authority not only opened the Upper Towaliga, Cole Reservoir but also opened the Tussahaw Reservoir on March 1st. This will get the spring fishing season started one month early this year. Fishing is permitted on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m to 7 p.m. The reservoirs will also be open on various holidays throughout the spring, summer and fall. Both reservoirs are located in Locust Grove. Heron Bay Golf and Country Club is located on the Cole Reservoir and boasts stunning views of the water from their Lakefront Park and Pavilion, which will open this spring.

Locust Grove Conference Center

The city of Locust Grove’s first conference center is under construction. Local residents will soon be able to utilize the venue for meetings, banquets and weddings. The conference center will hostmajor events as well.

It will be located on Bowden Street behind Warren Holder Park and will accommodate nearly 400 people over 15,000 square feet. The conference center is set to open in the fall of 2008.

Heron Bay residents will soon be able to benefit from this new amenity in Locust Grove.

Attend a Concert and Experience Part of Local History

Join your Locust Grove neighbors as they take a stroll down memory lane at a benefit concert being held in an auditorium that has not been open to the public for twenty-five years. The auditorium, located upstairs in the city hall building, has 180 seats, a small stage and a piano.

The Locust Grove Heritage Foundation will hold a benefit concert, called: “Music and Memories” in the auditorium on Mar. 1. The Heritage Foundation preserves and educates citizens about the Locust Grove history and lifestyle.

The city hall building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, served as a preparatory school, “the Locust Grove Institute” from 1893 to 1930 when it closed during the Great Depression. The building later reopened to house the Locust Grove Elementary School until 1983 when e it came under use by the city for administrative offices.

Bay Pharmacy in Henry Herald

Bay Pharmacy, the new pharmacy opening at Town Center at Heron Bay was recently in the Henry Daily Herald, “Full-time pharmacy comes to Heron Bay.”

Residents at Locust Grove’s Heron Bay will soon have the convenience of a pharmacy in the neighborhood, in addition to the many other amenities of this golf course community just 40 minutes south of Atlanta. The article includes an interview from one Heron Bay recent that is very excited to have a pharmacy so close to home. “I think it [the pharmacy] will be a great asset, we won’t have to drive a distance to get the immediate care that we need,” said 60-year-old Grace Blount, a two-and-a-half-year resident of the Heron Bay community. Blount said it will be nurturing to have a neighborhood pharmacy within walking distance of her home. (more…)
