Henry County Honors Veterans
This month 90 years ago in 1919, President Wilson declared November 11th as the first Veterans day saying,
“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”
Since then, Americans across the country have come out on November 11th to honor and recognize the efforts of those who proudly served our county.
Henry County residents are invited to attend the Henry County Veterans Day service on November 11th. The service will be held at the newly constructed Veterans Wall of Honor in Heritage Park at 2:30 p.m., and will include a welcome by Chairman Elizabeth ‘B.j.’ Mathis, patriotic music, the presentation of our National Colors and a special wreath. Army veteran, Chaplain Eric Erkinnen will also be speaking at the event. Chaplain Erkinnen is currently serving as the Associate Director of the Ministry to the Armed services following his 20-year active duty career in the United States Army.
In addition to attending the service, those wishing to honor a loved one or show support may also purchase an inscribed paving brick to be displayed at the monument. For more information please visit www.veteranswallofhonor.org.
Heritage Park is located just down the road from Heron Bay Golf & Country Club. In addition to attending the Veterans Day service, residents of the master-planned golf community can visit the museum and historic village located in the park. The village features a log cabin, detached cookhouse, schoolhouse and a 1934 steam engine locomotive and is sure to provide a day of fun and learning for the whole family.
